California's First Black Surfer

Nick Gabaldon is often credited as being the first black surfer. To avoid the beaches where he wasn't welcomed, Nick would paddle 12 miles each way to surf with his white friends. Eventually they realized what he was doing and gave him rides in their cars. Read - 6 minutes
